PACKING WORKFLOWS · 3PLWOW
First-Order & Renewal Subscription Packing
A subscription’s first delivery may include a reusable container, welcome guide or gift that later deliveries do not need. The warehouse must be able to distinguish those order profiles reliably. 3PLWOW can discuss separate starter and renewal packing workflows using the order information provided by your selling system.

Use a dependable order trigger
Decide how a first order is identified: a dedicated starter SKU, a component list or another supported data field. Avoid basing the distinction on a packer’s memory of the customer’s name. Test the actual order data from your subscription platform, including recurring orders, customer changes and cases where a returning customer buys a new starter product.
Give each profile its own packing brief
List the contents, packaging and inserts for a first delivery and a renewal. Identify any monthly edition changes or optional products. A renewal can have a different parcel size and protection requirement from a starter kit. Include those profiles when discussing handling and postage rather than applying one assumed package to every order.
Plan corrections and timing
Agree how holds, skipped renewals, cancellations and address changes reach the fulfilment team before dispatch. Define the point after which a change may no longer be possible. Subscription billing and payment collection remain part of the selling system unless specifically agreed otherwise. Warehouse instructions should reflect the authorised order supplied to it.
A WORKED EXAMPLE
Make the brief practical
Example brief: the first order contains two pouches, a storage container and a welcome card. Renewals contain two pouches and the current information leaflet. A distinct starter identifier prevents the reusable container being sent repeatedly.
What to prepare
- First-order identification method
- Starter and renewal component lists
- Test orders for changed subscriptions
- Hold, cancellation and address-change route
Questions to settle before go-live
Can you manage subscription payments?
This page covers fulfilment after an authorised order reaches the warehouse. Payment, renewal scheduling and subscriber account changes are separate platform functions unless explicitly included in the agreed setup.
What should I test before launch?
Test a first order, a normal renewal, an altered selection and a held order. Confirm the contents, packaging and status information that each produces.
