Retail-Ready Wholesale Packing UK

A wholesale order often needs more than several consumer parcels combined. Case quantities, carton labels and the retailer’s receiving instructions can determine whether a delivery is straightforward to accept. 3PLWOW can discuss wholesale pick and pack requirements alongside an ecommerce operation.

Start with the customer’s receiving brief

Ask the retailer or distributor for its current packing and delivery instructions. Identify purchase-order references, carton labels, case quantities, pallet requirements and any booking process. Requirements vary by customer, so one generic warehouse label should not be assumed to meet them all. Share the brief before pricing or scheduling the work.

Define each and case quantities

Explain how many individual retail units belong in a case and whether mixed cases are permitted. A wholesale system ordering two cases must not be interpreted as ordering two single products. Map the customer’s codes to your own SKUs and show representative orders. Include any pre-labelling or repacking needed to make stock retail-ready.

Agree responsibility for paperwork and exceptions

Specify who supplies commercial documents, labels and delivery references, and who approves a deviation from the retailer’s instructions. If stock is short, define whether the warehouse holds the order or seeks permission to part-ship. Any retailer compliance claim must be assessed against the actual brief rather than implied by the phrase wholesale fulfilment.

A WORKED EXAMPLE

Make the brief practical

Example brief: an online order requests two retail units, while a trade purchase order requests two cases of twelve. Separate unit mapping and carton instructions stop the same product code being interpreted in two different ways.

What to prepare

  • Retailer-specific receiving instructions
  • Each/case quantity mapping
  • Carton or pallet labelling examples
  • Paperwork owner and shortage decisions

Questions to settle before go-live

Can ecommerce and wholesale use the same stock?

That can be scoped, provided unit mapping, allocation and packing instructions distinguish the channels. Explain how trade orders reach the warehouse and how stock availability is managed.

Can you guarantee compliance with every retailer?

The actual retailer requirements need reviewing and agreeing. Do not assume specialist labels, bookings, presentation or penalty exposure are included without that assessment.
